Frequently Asked Questions l Guidelines for Applicants

Who can apply?

  • Children and youth up to 18 years of age who are from low-income families and are unable to afford the registration fees.
  • Children and youth who are not participating in another registered program. One program per child, per season.

It's easy to apply.

  • Choose a community-based program of interest to the child/youth. Look in "The Key" - Thunder Bay's Guide to Community programs, and other publications for activities that are available each season.
  • Identify the activity and the organization providing this activity (ie. Hockey, Grandview Recreational Hockey Association).
  • Download an Application Form .
  • Mail it, fax it, or drop it off at:

Parents: Frequently Asked Questions
  • What programs are available through P.R.O. Kids?
    First you should find out what your child is interested in and when they have free time for an activity. Contact the P.R.O. Kids Coordinator for guidance about activities that are a good match for your child's age, interests, and schedule.

  • How do I know if my child(ren) qualify?
    If you are unsure, call P.R.O. Kids at (807) 625-3212 to discuss. What is it about your circumstances that makes you think you would qualify? Applicants must provide a reference who can verify financial need.

  • Who can be a reference?
    A reference is someone who can confirm the personal and financial situation as they relate to this child. (Example: Social Worker, Clergy, Group Leader, Coach, Teacher)

  • When can I apply?
    P.R.O. Kids accepts applications on a seasonal basis, one season before the start-up of a program. Placement is based on the registration guidelines of the recreation organization and the availability of spaces.

  • Will everyone know that my child participates through P.R.O. Kids?
    The P.R.O. Kids Coordinator, the organizer of the activity, and perhaps the coach or leader will know. We ask that the information be kept confidential so your child can participate as any other child would.

Process

  • Parent /caregiver completes P.R.O. Kids application form and send it in.

  • Application is received by P.R.O. Kids and dated.

  • Placement of children is made per program, on first come first served basis

  • Reference check is completed.

  • Activity provider is contacted to inquire whether space is available.

  • Confirmation is sent to activity provider, listing names of children placed.

  • Letter of confirmation is sent to parent/caregiver

  • Parent/caregiver can follow up with P.R.O. Kids at any time to check the status of the application.


Guidelines for Applicants.

  • Applications are processed based on program deadlines on a first come, first served basis.

  • P.R.O. Kids allows children to access one activity each season

  • The service is for children/teens who are not currently participating in other paid recreation programs. It is not intended to supplement participation in more than one activity at a time

  • The parent/guardian or youth is responsible for registering directly with the identified partner organization once P.R.O. Kids has placed the child.
    This could mean phoning the partner contact person; signing up on registration day; or filling in forms - it will vary from program to program

  • The parent/guardian is responsible for ensuring that the child attends the program
    If transportation or equipment is an issue, contact P.R.O. Kids for assistance

  • There is a waiting lists for programs. If for some reason the child can no longer participate, the parent/guardian must contact the program and the P.R.O. Kids coordinator, so another child can fill the space

  • If the parent/teen encounters any problem with the program, they are responsible for contacting P.R.O. Kids. The Coordinator will try to resolve it
